The Camas girls soccer team did everything it could to defeat the 3A state champions.

Columbia River put tons of pressure on the Papermakers, but the defensive dam never broke.

The result was a 0-0 draw Thursday, at Kiggins Bowl.

“I liked how well we played, I just wished we would have gotten one in the net,” said Camas junior midfielder Riley Allison. “This is going to light a flame under us, for sure.”

Allison got her head on a corner kick delivered by Sarah Tennyson, but the ball darted over the crossbar and out of bounds.

“It was a really good look. I just wished it would have gone in instead of over,” Allison said. “I know I’ll aim down more the next time. Just take one step back and get a better angle on it.”

Camas created a few more scoring chances. Mason Minder fired a powerful free kick from about 20 yards out, but the Columbia River goalkeeper swatted the ball away. Mika Norrish juggled around a defender and took a shot at the net, but the keeper caught the ball.

The Papermakers scrambled for one more shot before time expired. Anyssa DeVera chipped the ball over the head of the keeper, but it took a bad bounce and skipped past the open net.

“River tried to push through our backline, but we were able to play some soccer,” said head coach Roland Minder. “Everybody worked really hard and everybody wanted it. I’m proud of every player. They all put it in.”

Camas returns to Kiggins Bowl tonight to face Skyview. The Papermakers also host Battle Ground Thursday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

“If we play like this against our league teams, I don’t think anybody will score on us,” Allison said. “We just have to put some balls in the net. That will be our focus.”
