Did your feet get wet and cold in all that weekend rainy weather? Consider what it’s like for homeless feet, with no dry place to go and no change of footwear waiting there. Common ailments such as athlete’s foot can thrive, and serious problems including frostbite can strike when people have no choice except to wear the same damp, cold socks all the time.
That’s why Share, a leading provider of services to the hungry and homeless, always hosts its “Operation Sole Mates” sock drive in October. All donated socks will be distributed to people living in the streets via Share’s Outreach program, as well as to clients currently in shelters. Share also welcomes donations of new underwear for men, women and children in all sizes.
“So often we see street homeless asking for spare change or food, but we feel this is a much more productive way to raise awareness, help address their needs and, hopefully, move them into shelter,” said Katherine Garrett, director of Share House and Share Outreach.
Donations can be dropped off throughout the month of October at the Share Fromhold Service Center, 2306 N.E. Andresen Road, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, or at one of the following shelters: Share House, 1115 W. 13th St.; Share Homestead, 4921 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave.; and Share Orchards Inn, 5609 N.E. 102nd Ave.
