“Earth,” a kinetic metal and glass sculpture, will soon be installed and dedicated near downtown Washougal.
The artwork, created by Sharon Warman Agnor, will be presented during a ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m., at Pendleton Way and the state Route-14 pedestrian tunnel.
Washougal Parks/Cemetery/Facilities Manager Suzanne Grover said Clark Public Utilities volunteered equipment and three men to install a pole that the artwork will be placed on. The piece is approximately 8 feet tall and 32 inches wide.
The ceremony will be presented by the Washougal Park Board, Washougal Arts & Culture Alliance and Women Who Weld. Those who attend the event will have an opportunity to meet Agnor and artwork sponsor Shirley Scott.
Agnor credited Grover for keeping the Elements project rolling.
“I am really excited to see the first sculpture go up,” Agnor said. “I love it’s location and the fact that there are basalt benches all around it since that is the inspiration for “Earth.”
“Washougal and the Columbia Gorge are so rich in volcanic activity and all the basalt that comes with it,” she added.
The sculpture had been located in the Port of Camas-Washougal office lobby since June 2012.
“Earth” is the first in a series of four elements. The others and their future locations are “Water” by Wendy Armstrong, at Reflection Plaza, “Fire” by Jennifer Corio, at Steamboat Landing Park, and “Wind” by Kathy Willson, at Beaver Park.
Each element can be sponsored for $2,500. Smaller donations help cover installation expenses.
