ABERDEEN — Big plays added up to a big 47-3 win for the Woodland Beavers over Montesano on Thursday.
Four first-quarter touchdowns put Woodland in command as Beavers coach Mark Greenleaf earned his 100th career coaching victory, 64 of them at Woodland.
That the win for the No. 4-ranked Beavers came against the defending Class 1A state champions on the road make it more memorable for Greenleaf.
“It’s pretty spectacular,” Greenleaf said. “Montesano is Montesano. They have a great program. They’re always reloading.”
Eli Whitmire’s huge night helped blow away the Bulldogs. Whitmire scored four touchdowns and finished with 264 yards of offense plus a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown.
In the first quarter, Whitmire took swing passes from Hunter Huddleston for touchdowns covering 55 and 73 yards. Hunter Huddleston scored on runs of 10 and 11 yards to cap the big first quarter.
Trevor Huddleston returned an interception 97 yards in the second quarter to make the halftime lead 34-3.
“Our kids played great on all levels — defense, offense and special teams,” Greeleaf said.
He noted that in the first half, the Woodland defense halted three Montesano drives deep into Beavers territory.
Greenleaf said he was doused by at least three buckets of ice water after the game, before a team picture was taken to mark win 100.”It’s special,” he said. “The kids feel good about beating the reigning state champions at their house.”
