UPDATE: From Eileen Cowen, market director: Unfortunately, the rain has caused us to cancel tonight’s market. Our lot is flooded and the forcast doesn’t look promising for a dryout. Thanks to everyone who supported this project! We have an incredible community here in the ‘Couve.

EARLIER STORY:

Vancouver’s Urban Growers Market, which brought together shoppers and backyard farmers, will hold its final market today.

Because of a drop in interest from both visitors and vendors, market Director Eileen Cowen said, the group chose to end its run rather than hobble forward. The last sale is from 4 to 7 p.m. outside One World Merchants, 2315 Main St.

When the group held its first small market in 2011, Cowen said Vancouver, especially downtown, was less vibrant than today. Now, with a number of nearby farmers markets and other places to buy locally sourced food, she said there’s less need for their service. The Urban Growers Market, which ran twice a month during summer, let small-scale growers sell their goods for a $10 fee.

A May fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to help the market buy supplies and a stage for music brought in $1,155 from 22 donors.

“We’re not calling it a bad thing,” Cowen said. “The community is moving on to better things. Our part is done.”
