WOODLAND — Wins don’t come much easier than career win No. 99 did for Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf on Friday night.

His Beavers ran roughshod over Seton Catholic 74-0 at Woodland Stadium in a 1A Trico League contest to move Greenleaf to within one victory of a career milestone.

For Greenleaf to reach the century mark next week, though, Woodland (3-0, 3-0) will need to take down defending 1A state champion Montesano.

“The whole goal tonight was to execute on all levels,” Greenleaf said. “Hopefully, we can keep this momentum up for next week.”

Seton Catholic (1-2, 1-2) was hoping to build off the momentum of last week’s 34-16 win over Ilwaco, only the two-year program’s second all-time.

But Woodland quashed those hopes in the game’s first 11 minutes, scoring three offensive touchdowns on just six total plays while also returning an interception and a fumble for scores.

Eli Whitmire powered through two tackles on the game’s second play to dash for a 51-yard touchdown, setting the tone for the evening.

“Our kids are physical, and they go out to compete on every single down,” Greenleaf said.

The Cougars showed signs of getting their read-option attack going in the opening quarter, with quarterback Will Noce-Sheldon converting twice on fourth down and directing Seton on two drives into Woodland territory.

But the Cougars self-destructed at key moments (six turnovers), and without a healthy punter, they kept giving the Beavers the ball back with a short field to work. Woodland needed only 11 offensive plays in the first half to rack up five touchdowns, and coupled with three defensive scores, led 55-0 at intermission.

“We learned a lot from this game about having to be consistent and executing,” said Seton coach Dan Chase, whose team hosts Stevenson next week. “Our kids are motivated to get better.”
