Carroll College freshman goalkeeper Jamie Carter was named the Frontier Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the first week of September.
The Saints (3-1) have not played a game since, but their next one is 7 p.m. Friday in Portland against NAIA powerhouse Concordia University.
Carter, a Camas High School graduate, made 14 saves and allowed two goals in three games as the Saints beat Biola 1-0 and Northwest Christian 3-1 and lost to Northwest University 1-0.
Carter is one of three freshman getting significant playing time for Carroll, an NAIA school in Helena, Mont.
“She’s very athletic, very smart,” Carroll coach Dave Thorvilson told the Independent Record of Helena. “At times she looks like a freshman, but at times she looks like a seasoned player. It’s nice to have depth at that position.”

Boise State’s Hruby MWC player of week
Boise State senior forward Ashley Hruby was named Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer.
Hruby, a Union High School graduate, garnered MWC honors for the first time in her career. She recorded an assist Friday against North Dakota State and scored a goal and an assist Sunday against North Dakota.
Hruby has five points this season, already marking her season best.
Soccer
Bodenhamer named to all-tournament team
Portland State freshman midfielder Aurora Bodenhamer was named to the all-tournament team of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic following the Vikings’ split of two matches in Waipahu, Hawaii.
The Hockinson High School graduate scored the opening goal of Portland State’s 2-0 victory Sunday over tournament host Hawaii. Her goal was assisted by junior forward Eryn Brown, a Camas High School graduate.
Portland State opened the event Friday with a 1-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast.
The Vikings (3-4-0) next play the University of San Francisco at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium.
Football
Midwest Conference honors IC’s Newman
Illinois College junior kicker Matt Newman was named Midwest Conference football Special Teams Player of the Week after converting all six of his extra piont attempts during the Blueboys’ 42-13 victory over Grinnell College.
The Ridgefield High School graduate has made 66 consecutive extra point attempts, dating to early in the 2012 season. His second conversion Saturday was on a drop kick.
Illinois College is 2-0, 1-0 in conference play.
Cross country
Cornell’s Tedder wins first collegiate race
Cornell University freshman Mark Tedder won his first collegiate cross country race Saturday.
The Battle Ground High School graduate led the way in a dual against Army, finishing the 5-mile race in 25 minutes, 22.3 seconds. The Big Red defeated the Cadets, 19-40.
The Big Red held out its top four runners for strategic reasons, according to the school website cornellbigred.com, and “relied on its younger up-and-coming stars to shoulder the load.”
Tedder probably felt like he was home in the Northwest for the race, which was run in rainy, windy, 55-degree conditions at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca, N.Y.
Volleyball
GNAC honors NNU volleyball team
Northwest Nazarene University’s volleyball squad was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference team of the week for Sept. 9-15.
The Crusaders won three of four matches at the Route 92 Showdown tournament hosted by Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif., and Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif., over the weekend. They beat Holy Names, Cal State Los Angeles and Humboldt State, with a loss to Azusa Pacific.
Heritage High School graduate Kaitlyn Tuholski, a junior outside hitter for the Crusaders (4-2), is third on the team with 41 kills (2.16 per set), fourth with 61 digs (3.21 per set) and fifth with 12 total blocks (0.63 a set), including one solo block and 11 asssists.
“It was a pretty good day overall for NNU volleyball and a great way to get ready for conference play,” NNU coach Doug English told the school website nnusports.com about the team’s two Saturday victories.

• Florida Southern freshman outside hitter Brindl Langley (Camas High School) had 31 kills and 56 digs in four matches for the Mocs in their season-opening home tournament. She posted a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs in a loss to Northwood. Langley has 73 kills and 91 digs this season for the Mocs (5-3).
• Northwest Nazarene freshman soccer midfielder Marshall Hartley (Mountain View High School) “broke his clavicle in two places and is likely done for the season,” the school said, during a 2-2 draw Saturday agianst Dixie State College of Utah.
