Jesuit got back to being Jesuit on Friday night.
At the expense of the Union Titans.
A week after losing to a Clark County team, the powerhouse from Oregon got a win in Clark County, rolling to a 32-7 victory over the Titans at McKenzie Stadium.
The Crusaders scored the first five touchdowns of the game and were never threatened.
“We played a team tonight that’s a real proud program. They obviously didn’t have a performance they were proud of last week,” Union coach Cale Piland said, referring to Jesuit’s 47-14 loss at Camas. “We knew we were going to face a group looking to rectify some things. They did.”
Jesuit (2-1) scored on its first three drives of the game. The first was traditional Jesuit — a 10-play, 59-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Chase Morrison.
The Crusaders then turned into a highlight reel. Trent Werner got behind the Union defense and caught a perfect pass from Eric Restic for a 92-yard touchdown to make it 12-0. That was one play after a Union punt.
Then, one play after Union missed a field goal, Joey Alfieri scored on an 80-yard touchdown run. That gave Jesuit 172 yards and two touchdowns in consecutive plays from scrimmage.
Alfieri would add a 17-yard TD run to make it 25-0 with just less than five minutes left in the first half.
The Titans (1-1) got something going with three first downs on three plays before the half, but an interception ended the drive. The Titans finished with three turnovers in the game.
“We made too many mistakes tonight,” Piland said.
Alfieri scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter to make it 32-0.
The Titans did get on the board in record-setting fashion in the fourth quarter. Leon Siofele broke free for a 97-yard touchdown run, the longest play from scrimmage in the program’s seven-year history.
“I was thinking, ‘We’re not going down like this. We at least have to score once’ ” Siofele said. “I had the mentality that we weren’t going to quit. I wanted to keep fighting. I wanted my teammates to keep fighting. I wanted to set the example.”
The Titans kept fighting, but they could not hold off an onslaught of offense from Jesuit.
Alfieri rushed for 143 yards on eight carries and Morrison had 117 on 19 attempts. The Crusaders totalled 423 rushing yards, as well as another 98 through the air.
Siofele finished with 190 yards on 13 carries with that touchdown.
“We’re going to learn from this, and we’re going to get better,” Piland said.
