Try This: Symphony concert outdoors

You can spend a Sunday with the sounds of Verdi, Copland, Dvorak and Beethoven as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra revives its outdoor concert event. Warming up for its 35th season, the orchestra will be led by guest conductor Awadagin Pratt, a renowned conductor, pianist and violinist who has performed from the White House to “Sesame Street.” Baritone singer Stephen Salters will join in on the performance, and Beacock Music will provide a musical instrument “petting zoo” for children to try out instruments themselves.

The concert is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend.

2. Fun and safety

September is National Preparedness Month, and the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency hopes to help the community prepare for a disaster with Ready Clark Expo and Open House. Visitors can take a tour of the 9-1-1 dispatch center, try hands-on children’s activities and preparedness games, watch K-9 police dog demonstrations, along with appearances by search-and-rescue animals and rescue vehicle displays including bomb squad robots.

3. Working for peace

Celebrating 10 years of promoting a more hopeful world, the Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair will feature 70 community groups gathering to share their voices and ideas in an effort to bring peace and justice at home and around the world. The event features music, dance, local food, poetry, games and children’s activities, including a performance by the band Mystic Canyon.

4. Community carnival

The annual Vancouver Sausage Festival at St. Joseph Catholic School kicks into high gear today, starting with a 5K fun run and a 1K kids dash. The festival features a carnival, beer garden, children’s activities and an entertainment lineup that includes the Magenta Theater Band, Molly Malone-Irish Dancers and Hit Machine. On Sunday, the stage will be filled by Evergreen Dance Academy, Stardust Quartet, Dance Fusion, a hula hoop contest, and the Southwest Washington Got Talent Finale.

8 a.m. 5K run, 8:30 a.m. 1K kids dash; festival 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. today and 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

5. A little love

Pacific Stageworks presents “The Mikado,” a musical comedy about forbidden love, based on the 1885 opera. Ko-Ko, high lord executioner of Titipu, wishes to marry Yum-Yum, who is in love with Nanki-Poo, the Mikado’s son who is disguised as a wandering minstrel.

When: 2 and 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday.

6. Deadly game of cat-and-mouse

Vin Diesel returns as the antihero Richard B. Riddick, survivalist and dangerous convict who was left for dead on a desolate planet teeming with alien predators. But as word of his location reaches the bounty hunters of the galaxy, Riddick turns his entrapment into a cage for revenge. “Riddick” is rated R.
