Hockinson walked away from its first game under new head coach Brian Schott with a shutout against Elma.
The only touchdown of the game was scored when Jess Krahn threw a 74-yard pass to Nicholas Barclay in the third quarter.
“That was our two captains making plays,” Schott said.
Krahn threw an interception to Elma’s Todd Swinhart, who ran it back for an apparent touchdown, but the play was called back due to a penalty.
In the last 50 seconds of the game, Elma quarterback Ryan Collin managed to move the ball 75 yards to the Hawks’ 5-yard line, but was unable to score before time ran out.
“Our defense bent, but it never broke,” Schott said. “A shutout is pretty impressive, especially against a spread offense.”
