Vancouver collected more than an inch of rain between Thursday morning and Friday morning, according to National Weather Service data.
The 24-hour period collected 1.10 inches of rain. Forecasts say the showers will continue today, mainly before 11 a.m., with new precipitation estimated at bringing between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain.
The weather service said the rainfall this morning may cause minor urban flooding, which officials did report seeing.
Washington State Patrol responded to several crashes overnight, though Trooper Will Finn could only confirm that one was weather-related. Water on the roadway caused a crash at Interstate 5 near Interstate 205 in Salmon Creek about 5 a.m.
“There was some hydroplaning there,” Finn said.
He did not have any immediate details about the crash.
A tree had reportedly fallen across Northwest Spencer Road, about a mile south of Northwest Timmen Road south of La Center. The hazard was reported about 6:45 a.m., but was cleared by 8 a.m.
Washington State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Abbi Russell said there was ponding on Interstate 5 in Vancouver and cautioned drivers to be safe while traveling the high speeds.
“When it rains this hard, people are going to see water in the roadway everywhere they go,” she said.
She said the most important thing drivers can do is to drive for the wet conditions, which she says typically means slowing down and leaving more space between cars.
“It’s like we get rain amnesia,” she said. “It’s something we forget. Every time we have our first big rain we see a lot of collisions and a lot of issues.”
