The first-ever volunteer for low-income homebuilder Habitat for Humanity International will be the guest speaker at the local branch’s annual “Raising the Roof” free breakfast, set for 7 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington, 301 W. Sixth Street.
Clive Rainey, a Habitat volunteer since 1977, is responsible for the organization’s central tenet, “sweat equity” — that is, a family devoting labor to building its own house as a partial down payment. Rainey will share stories from his travels around the world for Habitat. Also, local awards will be presented to Terri Brouillet, Bill Bryant, and Barry and Nancy Sullivan.
Brouillet has volunteered with local Evergreen Habitat for Humanity for 13 years. Bryant has been a member of the board, off and on, for 22 years. And the Sullivans, owners of the Grocery Outlet location on Fourth Plain Road in Vancouver, are key supporters of Evergreen Habitat for Humanity.
“Kitchen pantries are filled at each home dedication with groceries and other household items, and generous gift certificates are donated by Grocery Outlet to help the new homeowners get off to a great start,” said Melissa Edwards, development and marketing coordinator for Evergreen Habitat for Humanity.
