More than 60,000 pounds of food for the Clark County Food Bank was collected during the Clark County Youth Football jamboree on Aug. 24.
The fifth-annual Titans Youth Foundation and CCYF Food Drive set a record for the amount collected.
Led by the 10,196 pounds collected by the Battle Ground Tigers eighth-grade teams, 22 of the 43 participating CCYF teams collected at least 500 pounds of food, according to organizer Nolan Henry.
“The Battle Ground community should be commended for their outstanding efforts,” Henry said. Battle Ground teams collected almost 15,000 pounds, one quarter of the total.
By collecting at least 1,500 pounds of food, four CCYF teams earned a pizza party courtesy of Pied Piper Pizza and local State Farm Insurance agents.
The Cougars team of second- and third-graders collected 4,134 pounds. The Battle Ground seventh-grade team collected 3,180 pounds. The Falcons sixth-grade team collected 1,589 pounds.
The three teams that collected the most food also earned a round of golf for their coach at Green Mountain Golf or Fairway Village, plus a massage for their team parent at Priority Health Chiropractic and Massage.
Independent from CCYF teams, a combined effort from Rose City Printing and Packaging and its employees and Team Balance basketball collected 8,363 pounds of food.
Henry is a Union High School junior and the Titans’ starting quarterback. He said more than 100 CCYF volunteers and Union High students were key to making the food drive a success. He said his brother Dylan filled in for him at the food drive because Nolan Henry was busy with Union High football activities.
A raffle held in conjunction with the food drive raised money for the food bank. Memorabilia from St. Louis Rams backup quarterback Kellen Clemens, and prizes donated by area businesses made the raffle possible, Nolan Henry said.
Cyclocross event attracts hundreds
Killian Bailey of Vancouver and Tim Schauer of Camas were among the winning riders during a cyclocross event on Saturday at David Douglas Park.
The David Douglas Cyclocross Race attracted 578 competitors to kick off the 10-event Grand Prix Erik Tonkin. The series renames itself each year to honor a person involved in the local cyclocross scene.
Bailey, 17, won the Category B race by completing six laps of the course. Schauer, 45, won the race for riders weighing 200 pounds by completing five laps.
Cyclocross competitions are bicycle races over courses that include off-road terrain and obstacles that sometimes require riders to dismount and carry their bikes.
The second of six races in Clark County this fall is scheduled this week at Vancouver Lake Park. The first race on Sept. 7 begins at 8:40 a.m. with the last race scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
Patriot Day Races set for Saturday
The Clark County Running Club Patriot Day Races will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Cascade Park. Runners can choose among distances of four, eight or 12 kilometers.
The runs start at the intersection of McGillivray Boulevard and Bella Vista Road, which is just west of 164th Avenue.
Cost of Clark County Running Club races is $2. Runs are free for club members. To learn more, visit www.ccrunning.org.
Runs to benefit marriage nonprofit
Winning Marriages Go the Distance, a walk and run event, will take place on Sept. 14 at Salmon Creek Regional Park.
The event features a 10-kilometer race and a 5-kilometer run or walk. The races start at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m.
Cost to participate is $20, and free for those 17 and younger. Runners and walkers can sign up individually or join a team.
The event is a benefit for the Marriage Team, a Clark County-based non-profit that offers marriage counseling.
