Literacy may be the last thing on your mind when you’re homeless. But literacy can help lead the way out of homelessness too.
That’s why Vancouver’s Barnes & Noble bookstore has joined forces with Share Vancouver for a holiday book drive.
Now through the end of the year, you can purchase new books at the store for young clients of Share, a local nonprofit agency that operates several local homeless shelters and other programs for needy people. The books you buy will be collected and brought to Share by Barnes & Noble.
The books should be aimed at children — ages 18 and under.
“For homeless and low-income children, books are often a precious commodity,” said Share executive director Diane McWithey. “And research has shown that parents who have books in their home increase not only reading proficiency and vocabulary, but also the level of education their children will attain.”
