Students who aren’t old enough to vote can participate in a mock election on the Secretary of State’s website now through Friday. They’ll “vote” on some of the same issues that are on the real 2013 ballot.

To participate, students should go online to http://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/mock. Results will be posted on the website shortly after the election concludes at 1 p.m. Friday.

Two types of ballots are available: one for children, and one for teens. They get to vote on Initiative 522, regarding the labeling of genetically engineered food, and Initiative 517, which would make it easier to get initiatives on the ballot.

Teachers have reported that their students have a better understanding of the voting process after they participate in the mock election, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
