A big rig crossed all four lanes of Interstate 205 before crashing into a tree Wednesday afternoon in Vancouver.

Earlier reports from the Washington State Patrol saying that the big rig had collided with a Chevrolet suburban were incorrect. The two vehicles narrowly missed colliding.

The driver of the tractor, Christopher Gifford, 47, of Battle Ground, experienced a medical problem and lost consciousness while driving north on I-205, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn. His vehicle left the roadway to the left, crossed the grassy median and then the southbound lanes before striking a tree on the west side of the interstate.

Gifford was not injured in the collision, but he was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for evaluation, Finn said.

The accident was reported at 1:09 p.m.. just north of state Highway 500 near Milepost 31.

Two southbound lanes of the interstate were blocked for about 45 minutes.
