A longtime community volunteer is now the newest member of the Washougal School Board.
Jocelyn Lindsay, 41, was appointed to the position vacated by Terri Hutchins, who moved out of her director district. Lindsay will serve in this role through 2015.
“I’m looking forward to working with the school district,” she said. “I care deeply for Washougal. I believe in quality education for the children of our community.”
Lindsay is past president and current foundation president of the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club. She has co-chaired several of its programs, including the Ducky Derby and the Young Women in Action at Hathaway Elementary School.
The Hathaway program takes fifth-grade girls and pairs them with an adult female mentor. It runs for several weeks and includes career planning, etiquette, beauty treatments, financial education and more.
Lindsay is also a member of the Columbia Gorge Women’s Association, a local organization that raises funds to send women back to school.
Dawn Tarzian, superintendent of the Washougal School District, became acquainted with Lindsay because of their membership in the Rotary Club.
“I was very impressed with her leadership skills and her ability to inspire others to make a difference in our community,” she said. “She encouraged the Club to focus projects on the youth of our community.”
Tarzian added that Lindsay has training as a classroom teacher and has completed student teaching requirements that will bring an understanding of how classrooms function to her role as a board member.
“She also began attending board meetings two months ago to observe and learn more about how it functions,” she said.
Lindsay, an internet design and development consultant, is looking forward to serving on the board.
“She will be an exceptional fit,” said Blaine Peterson, board president.
Added Lindsay, “I am looking forward to working on the board with other passionate and dedicated community members committed to the success of all students in the district,” she said.
