Where they stand: At 9-3-0-1, the Winterhawks have 19 points and are tied for second in the WHL’s U.S. Division, one point behind Spokane.
On a roll: The Winterhawks have won six in a row including the first three games on a five-game road swing that includes three stops at Central Division arenas. Portland will visit the other three Central Division teams on consecutive nights in early December.
Scoring leaders: Nic Petan, the WHL player of the week for the week ending Oct. 20, now ranks second in the league with 26 points (eight goals, 18 assists). Oliver Bjorkstrand is third with 24 points.
Injury/status update: Dominic Turgeon (foot) returned to the lineup Oct. 12 and has a goal and two assists in six games. Paul Bittner (hand injury in the season opener) returned Saturday and scored his first goal of the season in the win at Tri-City. Shane McColgan (hand injury) played his first game as a Winterhawk in Wednesday’s win at Medicine Hat. A 20-year-old center, McColgan was acquired from Saskatoon in the offseason. Steven Alldridge (upper body injury) has not played since Oct. 12.

Fort Vancouver Vipers

Last week: Lost to Eugene 11-1, lost at Eugene 6-3.
Where they stand: At 0-7, the Vipers are last in the five-team Northern Pacific Hockey League.
Halloween on ice: On Saturday, pumpkins carved by Vipers players will be auctioned off during Fort Vancouver’s home game against West Sound. Promotions also include a costume contest.

• The second goal of Seth Jones NHL career was a slick game-winner at Montreal on Oct. 19. Jones took a pass from the left boards, faked a defender and wristed a shot past Carey Price with 1:27 left.
• Goalie Mac Carruth earned his first professional win on Saturday by stopping four of five shooters in a shootout as the Toledo Walleye beat the Fort Wayne Komets in an East Coast Hockey League season opener.
