After reading the Oct. 11 story “Haves, Have-Nots,” I had to comment about how times have changed.
My dad and his brothers grew up during the Depression. Dad’s oldest brother advised his siblings to turn out for football because you got a free hot shower after every practice. There must have been some merit to that advice, because my dad and all four of his brothers did turn out for football in the 1930s and 1940s and they would definitely have been in the “Have-Not” group. Grandpa did not install indoor plumbing until the boys left home to enlist in the service during World War II.
It’s too bad high school football ratings are now linked to how affluent your students are. I’m sure those hot showers were much appreciated by my dad and uncles.
