You can help beautify a freeway overpass that never got its due.
Hazel Dell neighborhood activist and businessperson Vicki Fitzsimmons is pressing ahead with her 78th Street Overpass Landscaping Project, bringing some beauty to a spot that was supposed to get landscaping but didn’t. It’s set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2.
Volunteers will plant trees and daffodil bulbs and spread bark dust along the I-5 onramps and offramps at 78th Street. The event will go ahead rain or shine, so please wear weather-appropriate clothing, long pants and sturdy-toed shoes. Bring shovels and gloves. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
Due to busy traffic and safety concerns, volunteers must be 15 years old to participate; those younger than 18 must provide a minor consent form. All volunteers will have to complete a liability release form on the day of the event. Please park and meet in the large lots north of Jack in the Box; the address is 7901 N.E. 6th Avenue.
Organizers want to know how many volunteers to expect. Register by completing the online form at parkhero.org. This project is a partnership between the Washington Department of Transportation, Clark County Public Works, the Hazel Dell Salmon Creek Business Association and and the Northeast Hazel Dell Neighborhood Association.
