Talking Points: First BCS standings

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

We could hear the outcry from here. It came from just about everywhere except Tuscaloosa and Tallahassee.

The first Bowl Championship Series standings were released Sunday evening with Alabama, Florida State, Oregon and Ohio State the top four.

Ducks fans were livid at being No. 3. Anti-Buckeyes thought No. 4 was too high. Oh, and why, others asked, isn’t Notre Dame in the standings?

We offer up this gripe: How is it that Oregon State is No. 25 in the BCS and yet not ranked in any of the polls?

Don’t worry college football fans. It’s not nearly over yet.

Not quite a mile-and-a-half separates St. Louis’ Busch Stadium (home of the baseball Cardinals) and the Edward Jones Dome (home of the NFL Rams).

If necessary, Game 5 of the World Series between the Cardinals and Red Sox is scheduled for 5:07 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, Oct. 28.

Thirty-three minutes later the Seahawks and Rams are scheduled to kickoff on Monday Night Football from inside the Dome.

Yikes!

It’s already been suggested the Rams simply move back to Los Angeles and avoid the potential conflict all together.

Not since his first game as head coach of the Oregon Ducks had a Chip Kelley football team not score in double digits.

On Sunday, Kelly’s Philadelphia Eagles lost 17-3 to the Dallas Cowboys. So much for that vaunted speed-up offense.

“It was 11 guys on offense. It was all of us on offense, me calling plays, everybody. It’s not just one guy,” Kelly said in his postgame remarks.

The ever-polite Eagles fans are already calling for their team to draft a Chip-offense-ready quarterback. And yes, the name Marcus Mariota has been brought up.
