So did you like the excitement and atmosphere around the Camas-Union football game?
Would you like to see it again?
I’m sure Papermaker fans would love that. Union fans? Well, the Titans wouldn’t mind another shot at top-ranked Camas.
If both of those statements are true, Camas and Union fans could get their wish — in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Of course, a lot has to happen between now and then.
First, Camas will need to secure the No. 1 seed from the 4A Greater St. Helens League. That may be a foregone conclusion to most, but it won’t become official until Friday, assuming Camas beats Heritage.
Next up, Union would have to finish No. 2 in the 4A GSHL. That would require a win by the Titans over Skyview in Week 9.
Then Camas and Union would need to win state preliminary and first-round games — both at home for Camas, both on the road for Union.
But if all that happens, then it would be Camas vs. Union at McKenzie Stadium on Nov. 22.
Let’s take a look at how the road to the postseason is shaping up for other football teams in the area.
4A GSHL: Battle Ground plays Skyview at Kiggins Bowl on Friday in a pivotal matchup. If Skyview wins, the Storm would face Union on Nov. 1 to decide the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds to the playoffs.
But if Battle Ground wins, the Tigers would secure the No. 3 seed with a Union win over Skyview on Nov. 1. A Skyview win over Union likely would set up a three-way tie for second, with a tiebreaker necessary to send two teams to the playoffs and one home for the season.
3A GSHL: Barring some unforeseen upset in Week 8, the playoff positions figure to be determined by two Week 9 matchups: Mountain View vs. Columbia River for the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, and Prairie vs. Kelso for the No. 3 seed.
2A GSHL: The 2A GSHL could come down to a rather simple Week 9, or we could be in for some wackiness. And unlike the 3A GSHL, the 2A league is a bit harder to predict.
The simple Week 9 would occur if Mark Morris beats Washougal on Friday and Hockinson beats Aberdeen. Then R.A. Long and Mark Morris would play on Week 9 for the league title, with the loser getting the No. 2 seed. That would leave the No. 3 seed going to the Hockinson-Washougal winner in Week 9.
But if Washougal wins on Friday and/or Hockinson loses to Aberdeen, then it opens a can of worms that we won’t bother to discuss at this juncture.
1A Trico: As we’ve suspected for a long time, Woodland and La Center will meet in Week 9 for the league title, with the loser getting the No. 2 seed to the district playoffs. Both teams will host district playoff games on Nov. 8.
Given the remaining schedule, it would take a major upset to prevent Kalama from claiming the No. 3 seed and White Salmon claiming the No. 4 spot to the playoffs.
