Winterhawks hold off Swift Current

The Portland Winterhawks picked up their third consecutive win with a 5-4 victory over the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League action Friday in front of 8,122 fans at the Moda Center.

Swift Current opened the scoring at the 12:23 mark of the first on a goal by Connor Sanvido, but the Hawks (6-3-0-1) tied it with 22.9 seconds left in the period on a goal by Brendan Leipsic.

Just over a minute into the second period Alex Schoenborn and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored just 21 seconds apart as the Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead.

Swift Current later tied the game on a pair of goals, but the Hawks regained the lead at the 8:58 mark on Nic Petan’s goal to make the score 4-3 going into the third.

Portland struck early in the third when Dominic Turgeon scored 34 seconds into the period for his first goal of the season and a 5-3 Hawks lead. Swift Current got within one on a goal at the 7:47 mark, but the Hawks shut the door from there.

• The Vancouver Vipers fell to 0-6 on the season with an 11-1 loss to the Eugene Generals in Northern Pacific Hockey League action Friday at Mountain View Ice Arena. Cody Dettman had the goal for the Vipers with an assist from Cisco Yslas.
