Where they stand: With five wins, three losses and one shootout loss, the Winterhawks are fourth in the U.S. Division with 11 points.
Injury/status update: Forward Dominick Turgeon has played in two games, his first of the season because of a foot injury.
Short-handed sniper: Oliver Bjorkstrand has scored three short-handed goals this season, including a penalty shot in Saturday’s win over Kamloops. Only six WHL teams have scored at least three shorthanded goals this season (Portland has four). Bjorkstrand’s 11 goals is tied for second in the league.
Fort Vancouver Vipers
This week: vs. Eugene, 7:35 p.m. on Friday at Mountain View Ice Arena; at Eugene, 7:35 p.m. Saturday.
Last week: Lost at Bellingham 17-1; lost at Tri-City 9-1.
Where they stand: At 0-5, the Vipers are last in the five-team Northern Pacific Hockey League.
Roster update: Defenseman Robin Haggstrom has arrived from Sweden. General manager Chuck Cheshire said the team is hoping to add a player from Medford and another from Seattle in the near future.

• Rookie Trevor Cheek of Vancouver has played in three of the Lake Erie Monsters’ first five games in the American Hockey League.
• Seth Jones scored his first NHL goal on Oct. 12 in Nashville’s win over the Islanders. Jones has two assists in six games.
• Also on Saturday, Nino Niederreiter scored his first goal for Minnesota.
• Ty Rattie scored his first professional goal as the Chicago Wolves won their American Hockey League home opener.
• Goalie Mac Carruth made 32 saves in a shutout win in a East Coast Hockey League with preseason game with the Toledo Walleye.
