Try This: Fall Leaves Special on Chelatchie Prairie Railroad

Autumn enthusiasts can delight in a train trip through north county’s fall forests, thanks to Chelatchie Prairie Railroad’s Fall Leaves Special. The trip will be powered by the railroad’s restored steam engine as its winds through a 330-foot rock tunnel and by Moulton Falls along the 12-mile round trip.

When: Noon and 2:30 p.m. today and Sunday.

2. Three Sunday concerts

The chamber music series by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra opens with its aptly themed concert “Autumn Glory.” Performing for the first time at the Kiggins Theater, musicians from the symphony will include the Douglas Fir Trio with concert pieces for clarinets and pianos.

3. Killer comedy

Love Street Playhouse presents “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a deadly comedy that follows Mortimer Brewster, who is reluctant to introduce his fiancee, Elaine, to his homicidal family. His spinster aunts, Abby and Martha, have the unfortunate hobby of inviting over lonely old men and poisoning their drinks.

4. Pumpkins aplenty

Take a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch at Velvet Acres Gardens, explore the petting zoo and travel through the in-barn hay maze tunnel. Or visit the pumpkin patch weekdays to find your perfect gourd. Hayrides run Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Walton Farms’ annual pumpkin patch features a ride around the farm on the barrel train, farm petting zoo and corn maze. On Friday and Saturday, explorers can venture through the corn maze at night, so be sure to bring a flashlight and boots for the mud.

5. Hijacked ‘Captain Phillips’

Tom Hanks stars as Captain Richard Phillips, who offers himself as a hostage to the Somali pirates during the 2009 hijacking of a cargo ship. Shifted to the pirates’ lifeboat, he is trapped with his captors, led by the young and fiery Muse (Barkhad Abdi) for several days as the U.S. Navy draws ever closer for a rescue attempt. “Captain Phillips” is rated PG-13.
