College Notebook: Black claims EWU career scoring mark
Overtime winner 18th of Battle Ground grad's career

Eastern Washington University junior forward Cassie Black’s overtime game-winning goal Sunday against Sacramento State was the 18th of her collegiate career, giving her sole possession of the program’s career record.
The Battle Ground High School graduate’s record-setting goal came in the 97th minute of the Big Sky Conference thriller against the Hornets.
The 2-1 victory was the first at home and first in conference play this season for the Eagles (3-10, 1-1 Big Sky).
“It’s definitely an achievement I’m excited about, but I just want wins,” Black said in a game highlight report available at http://tinyurl.com/k35ntua. “Anyone can score, as long as somebody does and we get results.”
Black again extended her own EWU record with her eighth career game-winning goal. “Great control and a stroke of luck in the 97th minute gave Kayla Sutter the perfect situation from just across midfield,” according to the EWU athletics website goeags.com. “Sutter sailed a pass high and over the defense, where a sprinting Black found the ball, dribbled past a sprawling (Sacramento State goalkeeper Kimberly) Mata and took two touches before ending the game with the open-net goal.”

WWU’s Sych named GNAC player of week
Western Washington University senior defender Brina Sych was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
The Union High School graduate helped the Vikings — ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II — remain undefeated at 9-0-0 with home wins over No. 23 Seattle Pacific, 2-1, and Central Washington, 2-0.
“Brina contributed on both sides of the ball,” WWU head coach Travis Connell told the school athletics website wwuvikings.com. “She was dependable defending and dangerous getting forward on the attack.”
In addition to organizing WWU’s back line, Sych scored the Vikings’ first goal against Seattle Pacific on her only shot of the week in the 29th minute. Sych followed with an equally impressive defensive effort Saturday.
Sych, a second-team All-American and GNAC Defender of the Year last season, has one goal and three assists, while leading a defense that has allowed just two goals.
Women’s soccer
Concordia’s Kimsey CCC player of week
Concordia University senior midfielder Hannah Kimsey was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
The Columbia River High School graduate scored one goal and notched one assist in each of CU’s wins last week. The returning NAIA First-Team All-American shares the CCC lead with six goals scored this season and holds the league’s top point total at 20 and assists mark with eight.
Kimsey assisted on a goal in the 80th minute for an all-important 2-0 lead before scoring on her own to make it a 3-0 advantage against EOU. Kimsey returned with a goal and assist in a 10-minute span to down College of Idaho 5-1 on Saturday.
Cross country
UP’s Tompkins eighth at Willamette Invite
University of Portland freshman Lindsay Tompkins placed eighth in the women’s Cardinal race Saturday at the 39th Annual Charles S. Bowles Willamette Invitational at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem.
The Prairie High School graduate ran the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 18 minutes, 11.57 seconds.
Other finishers included:
• Western Oregon senior Holly Meler (Columbia River High School), 17th in 18:40.73.
• Whitworth sophomore Amanda Blankenship (La Center High School), 18th in 18:42.02.
• Seattle Pacific sophomore Lynelle Decker (Mountain View High School), 32nd in 19:02.18.
• Northwest Nazarene sophomore Jadyn Gourley (Hockinson High School), 63rd in 19:25.55.
Women’s golf
Whiles leads Cavs
Concordia University freshman Kelsey Whiles (Hockinson High School) shot even-par 73 in the second round and tied for medalist honors with a 232 total as the Cavaliers won the Warner Pacific Invitational at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland.
Concordia junior Madison Alamillo (Battle Ground High School) was eighth with a 247 total.
