The league championship is in the golf bag for the Camas boys. Today, they are aiming for the flag sticks at the district tournament on Tri-Mountain.
“This is only my second league title. The last time we won it was when I was a sophomore,” said senior Braeden Campbell. “We won districts back when I was a freshman. I want to end off on a good note and double up with the league and district titles.”
Campbell is rolling after tying the school record with a round of 31 strokes Oct. 1, at Camas Meadows.
A heavy and steady rainfall continued for days leading into the match, but Campbell said the greens were still in good condition. He only needed nine putts to make history. He nailed birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17, before capping off an unforgettable round with an eagle on 18.
“It was the lowest round I ever shot in competition,” Campbell said. “After I made that first birdie putt, it was a good feeling. I had been under-reading putts all year, so I just went with more break.”
State champion Brian Humphreys, who shot a 31 on a sunny day last season, enjoyed watching his golfing buddy attack the greens. He felt even better Thursday, after the Papermakers defeated Battle Ground to secure the league title with a 5-0 record.
“We had a good team last year, but we didn’t get the title,” Humphreys said. “It’s nice to win more than just an individual title because we all worked hard for this.”
The Camas and Union golfers got off to a hot start in the first round of the district tournament Monday.
Union’s Eddie Abellar shot 2-under par 72 to lead Humphreys by one stroke. Campbell and Union’s Ben Gruher are both tied for third place with 72s.
Brett Ball and Kyle Hoover qualified for today’s final round with scores of 80. Chayce Heiberg and Levi Holscher didn’t make the cut for Camas.
“I’ll remember playing with Brady and Brian and becoming best friends through golf,” Ball said. “This is our last year together. I hope we can win districts and make it to state.”
