Kelowna rolls past Winterhawks, 6-2

Nick Merkley and Myles Bell had two goals apiece as Kelowna beat Portland 6-2 in Western Hockey League action Friday at Cranbrook, B.C.

Colton Heffley and Riley Stadel scored for the Rockets (4-0-1) while Tyson Baillie had three assists.

Taylor Leier and Alex Schoenborn supplied the offense for the Winterhawks (3-2-1).

Jordon Cooke earned the game’s first star and the victory by stopping 41 shots. Brendan Burke made 35 saves in a losing cause.

Portland faces Kelowna on the road again today before a week off.

Vipers home opener — The Vancouver Vipers face the Tri-City Outlaws at 7:35 p.m. today at Mountain View Ice Arena. Tickets for the home opener are $5 for adults, $3 students. Vancouver is 0-2 on the season.
