A Vancouver man experienced a stroke Wednesday morning during a minor two-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 southbound that clogged commuter traffic.
The collision was reported at 6:54 a.m. just before the East 39th Street overpass. Douglas Koenig was driving a 1991 Honda Accord south on the interstate when he struck a 2012 Ford van driven by Jonathan Steinmann, also of Vancouver, said Trooper Will Finn, spokesman for the Washington State Patrol.
When the troopers arrived, however, Koenig appeared to be paralyzed on his right side, Finn said. Medics confirmed that he was having a stroke. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday night in the intensive care unit at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.
Steinmann was not injured, the patrol said.
The collision blocked the left lane, slowing traffic for about 30 minutes.
