Where they stand: At 17-5-1-1, the Winterhawks have 36 points and are second in the U.S. Division, two points behind Everett. Their winning percentage (.750) ranks second behind Kelowna. The Winterhawks are ranked fifth in this week’s BMO CHL Top 10, which ranks the top teams in all three CHL leagues. Kelowna is third. Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League tops the rankings.
Subway Super Series: The Winterhawks’ Nic Petan has been named an assistant captain for Team WHL, which takes on Team Russia on Wednesday in Red Deer and on Thursday in Lethbridge. Taylor Leier, Brendan Leipsic and Derrick Pouliot will also participate. The four Winterhawks are more than any other WHL team in the series.
League leaders: Nic Petan has 48 points in 24 games (13 goals, 35 assists) and ranks second behind Spokane’s Mitch Holmberg on the Western Hockey League points list. Oliver Bjorkstrand (18), Chase De Leo (17) and Taylor Leier (17) are all among the top 10 goal scorers in the league.
