WWII veteran recounts war at Hathaway Elementary School

Washougal — Duncan MacDonald teared up as he told fifth-graders at Hathaway Elementary School about his time fighting in World War II. The 86-year-old Washougal resident visited the school on Veterans Day to meet with students and tell them stories, including how he ran away from home at 16 to join the Navy, shot down enemy planes and witnessed the Japanese surrender in 1945 at Tokyo Bay.
