Joshua Monda of Vancouver placed 43rd overall in the Ironman Arizona on Sunday, completing the triathlon in a personal-best time.
Monda, 31, finished the race in Tempe, Ariz., with a time of 9 hours, 12 minutes and 43 seconds and qualified to compete at the Ironman World Championships in October 2014. He was the second fastest finisher among males 30-34.
The 2.4-mile swim took Monda 1:04:22. The 112-mile bike ride took him 4:55:34. The 26.2-mile run took him 3:07:17. His total transition time between events was 5:30.
Teams head south for Pop Warner games
Five Pop Warner youth football teams from Clark County will be in northern California on Saturday for regional playoff games.
Two East County Jets teams will be playing at Woodside High School in Redwood City for berths in the Pop Warner Super Bowl tournament in Florida. At 8 a.m., the Jets’ Junior Pee Wee team (ages 8-11) takes on East Palo Alto. At 10 a.m., the Jets Pee Wee team (ages 9-12) will take on Brentwood.
Also at Woodside High School, the Vancouver Warriors take on Bayside at 6 p.m. in a Junior Midget (ages 10-13) regional playoff. That game, and two games involving Evergreen Bulldogs teams do not qualify the winners for a trip to Florida.
The Evergreen Junior Pee Wee team will play the Douglas Tigers at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Morgan Hill Sports Complex. At 10 a.m. at Morgan Hill, the Evergreen Pee Wee team will take on South Lake Tahoe.
Timbers Academy teams lose to Sounders
Despite a first-half goal from Peter Prescott of Vancouver, the Portland Timbers Academy under-18 team lost to the Seattle Sounders FC Academy, 2-1, on Saturday in Beaverton.
Prescott scored his second goal of the season on a free kick taken by Niko De Vera of Washougal to put the Timbers (3-5-2, 11 points) up 1-0.
Seattle also won the under-16 match, 1-0. In that match, goalkeeper Grant Alcorn of Vancouver helped keep the in the match with a series of saves.
Both the Timbers U-18 and U-16 teams are idle until Dec. 11, when play begins at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Florida.
Prep hockey team wins
Jeffrey Anderson of Union High School had a goal and an assist on Sunday, helping Team Gaustad beat Team Hossa 2-1 in a Winterhawks Varsity Hockey League game in Beaverton.
Anderson and Austin Martin of Hockinson assisted on the winning goal, which came with three seconds left in the third period.
Turkey Trot sign-up ends Friday
Registration ends Friday for the Clark County Turkey Trot runs. The event takes place at 9 a.m. on Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day, at Salmon Creek Regional Park.
There is a 10-kilometer run, a 5-kilometer run and a 5-kilometer walk. The event benefits the Clark County Food Bank.

Mixed bowling tourney concludes this week
The Clark County USBC Mixed Championships bowling tournament will conclude with squads at 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday and at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday at Tiger Bowl in Battle Ground. The tournament features doubles and four-person team competition. Each doubles entry must have a man and a woman. Each team must have two men and two women.

CrossFit clarification
The CrossFit Fort Vancouver Invitational fitness competition in January will feature 32 two-person teams — 16 men’s pairs and 16 women’s duos. A story published in the Nov. 12 Community Sports Notebook listed an incorrect number of participants.
Tickets for the event, to be held Jan. 11-12 at the Clark County Event Center in Ridgefield, have sold out. Organizers hope to add more seating, according to the event website.
