A man died Sunday night after the Mustang he was riding in crashed into a power transformer off Columbia Way, just east of the Interstate 5 Bridge.

The accident happened at 8:43 p.m. Two other occupants were taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, one in critical condition, said Vancouver Fire Battalion Chief Chris Lines. He said he was not certain how badly the other passenger was hurt.

Names of the three were not available.

Lines said he believed the three men were 20 to 25 years old. He said he was not certain which direction the Mustang had been headed. The car wound up facing east against the transformer.

“He’s up against a transformer,” Lines said of the 1990s-era Mustang. He said Clark Public Utilities officials said “don’t get around this car” because of electrical worries.

The accident caused lights to blink and go out briefly for 576 customers in downtown, said the utility’s Erica Erland.

Columbia Way was blocked.
