Winter steelhead seminar scheduled for Nov. 21
A free winter steelhead fishing seminar will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 at Pacific Northwest Sporting Goods, 212 N.E. 164th Ave, Suite No. 4.
Guide Steve Leonard will discuss fishing techniques and gear, including a bobber-and-jig, drift boat methods and curing of eggs and shrimp.
Bass and Panfish Club to share fishing, boating videos
PORTLAND — The Oregon Bass and Panfish Club will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave.
Club members will watch fishing, boating and safety videos. The public is welcome.
Forest Service proposing conifer sapling removal
TROUT LAKE — Comments will be accepted through Nov. 22 on a proposal to allow the public to remove conifer tree saplings near the Sawtooth berryfields in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Mose Jones-Yellin, Mount Adams district ranger, said he is interested in providing areas where the public can get conifer sapling transplants by permit or contract.
Removing some conifer saplings can promote huckleberry production and fruiting.
The elevation and soils around the Sawtooth berryfields produce alpine fir and mountain hemlock saplings at high numbers. There’s a demand from the public for one to five transplants for personal use and from nurseries who could implement contracts for removal of 100 to 300 trees.
Jones-Yellin is proposing to allow 295 acres for sapling removal. The acreage would include 145 acres along Gifford Pinchot roads Nos. 30, 24 and 3000-585 and 150 acres along road No. 3000-585, also known as the Berryfield Access Picnic Area.
Trees up to 6 feet in height would have their root balls excavated by hand, contained by burlap and carried by hand, cart or wheelbarrow to the road. Holes would have to be filled in.

Conference to celebrate 50th anniversary of Wilderness Act
TROUT LAKE — A conference entitled Celebrating 50 Years of Wilderness will be presented May 3 at Trout Lake School by the Friends of Mount Adams.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration prior to April 19 is $35 for an adult and $20 for a student. Checks may be mailed to Gerald Hess, FOMA Treasurer, P.O. Box 2108, White Salmon, 98672.
Speakers and their presentations will be:
o Doug Scott, retired policy director of The Campaign for America’s Wilderness, “Fifty Years of Progress for Wilderness — Mount Adams and Around the World.”
o Troy Hall, professor of conservation social sciences, University of Idaho, “Wilderness Recreation Challenges in the 21st Century.”
o Peter Landres, research scientist, Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute, U.S. Forest Service, Missoula, “The Central Dilemma of Wilderness: Should Restoration Action be Taken Inside Wilderness.”
In the afternoon, the conference will have one-hour sessions on how to be a wilderness advocate, wilderness recreation management challenges and educational and volunteer opportunities in the Mount Adams and other wilderness areas.

Ski and Snowboard Show this weekend at Expo Center
PORTLAND — The 33rd annual Portland Ski and Snowboard Show will be Friday through Sunday at the Portland Expo Center.
Admission costs $13 for adults and $3 for juniors ages 6 to 12.
Show hours will be 1 to 10 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The Expo Center is at 2060 N. Marine Drive.
Major outdoor equipment retailers will have products for sale, ski area sales directors will be on hand and used gear will be for sale.
