PORTLAND — Portland-based New Seasons Market, which operates a store in east Vancouver, announced Tuesday it has acquired a California-based chain with a “like-minded” mission.
New Leaf Community Markets will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the New Seasons chain, which focuses on locally produced organic foods and donates 10 percent of its after-tax profits to the communities it serves. New Leaf, an eight-store chain with California locations in Santa Cruz, San Jose, Half Moon Bay, Pleasanton and Capitola, is a B corporation, a form of for-profit corporation created for general public benefit.
Like New Seasons, New Leaf has a mission to strengthen the regional food shed by supporting local suppliers. New Leaf was founded in 1985 and New Seasons Market was founded in 2000 and has grown to a 13-store chain employing nearly 2,700 workers.
