Jr. hockey report: Winterhawks win streak ends at 11 games

Portland Winterhawks

This week: 7 p.m. Saturday vs. Victoria (Moda Center); 5 p.m. Sunday vs. Regina (Moda Center); 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. Tri-City (Moda Center); 7:35 p.m. Nov. 15 at Everett.

Last week: beat Seattle 5-2; beat Spokane 3-1; lost to Tri-City 3-2.

Where they stand: At 14-4-0-1, the Winterhawks have 29 points, most in the Western Hockey League.

Win streak at snapped: The Winterhawks win streak was halted at 11 games on Wednesday, when Tri-City won in Portland for the second time this season. Parker Bowles scored a breakaway goal with 26 seconds left to break a 2-2 tie after the Winterhawks were pressing for a go-ahead goal. Tri-City scored the tying goal with one second left in the second period after Portland led 2-0. It marked the first time in nine games that the Winterhawks trailed.

Scoring streaks: Oliver Bjorkstrand has points in 13 consecutive games and with two assists on Wednesday reached the 100-point mark in early in his second WHL season. With a goal and an assist on Wednesday, team captain Taylor Leier has a seven-game points streak (10 points).

Super Series selections: Leier, Brendan Leipsic, Nic Petan and Derrick Pouliot have been chosen to play for the WHL in the Subway Super Series. The games are against the Russian junior national team. The games are Nov. 27 in Red Deer and Nov. 28 in Lethbridge.

Fort Vancouver Vipers

This week: Idle.

Next home games: Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 against Bellingham.

Last week: Lost at Tri-Cities Outlaws Friday and Saturday, both by 7-0 scores.

Where they stand: At 0-10, the Vipers are last in the five-team Northern Pacific Hockey League.
