Well, the Mariners couldn’t draw Lou Piniella out of retirement for their managerial opening, but they may have got the next best thing on Tuesday in Lloyd McClendon.
You might not remember McClendon from his seven-year tenure as hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers or his five-year tenure as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
But if you Google “Lloyd McClendon stealing base” you’ll be treated to a Piniella-esque rant at an umpire in which McClendon concludes by walking off with the first base bag.
Classic.

Dominic Artis and Ben Carter have been suspended by the Oregon men’s basketball team for selling team-issued apparel.
The length of the suspensions has not been determined. Artis and Carter did not accompany the team on its trip to South Korea for the Ducks’ opener against Georgetown on Friday.
“As a student-athlete at Oregon, I recognize that I have a responsibility to represent our team and our University at all times with the utmost of integrity,” Carter said in a statement.
Wow, you could almost hear him saying those words. Not!

Texas voters have rejected a plan to convert the shuttered Houston Astrodome into a convention center and have likely doomed the iconic stadium to demolition.
Tuesday’s referendum would have authorized Harris County to issue up to $217 million in bonds to turn the world’s first multipurpose domed stadium into a giant convention and exhibition space.
The so-called “Eighth Wonder of the World” opened in 1965 and was once home to the Houston Astros and Houston Oilers. But the Astrodome hasn’t been home to a professional team since 1999, and it was closed to all events in 2009.
