Competing in her first singles race, Gabi White of Vancouver Lake Crew came in second in the girls single sculls race at Sunday’s Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle. Teammate Katie Hickey came in fourth in the race.
The VLC girls quad of coxswain Rylie Campbell, and rowers Caroline Kealoha, Bonnie Davidson, Ellie Varberg and Gabrielle McClure placed fourth.
The other VLC boat in Seattle, the boys junior varsity eight, included four rowers new to the sport. That boat placed ninth among 20 entries in its race. That crew was coxswain Deryk Ahner with rowers Tuck Wilcox, Michael Hewitt, Nicholas John, Pearce Fowler, Nick Bjergo, Phillip Renton, Jacob Skimas and Zachary Greenen.
The 5,000-meter race went from Lake Union to Lake Washington. A total of 436 boats, from nine states and Canada, participated in the event.
One week earlier, three boats from Vancouver Lake Crew won races during the Portland Fall Classic rowing regatta on the Willamette River.
Gabi White and Caroline Kealoha teamed to win the junior girls double scull race.
A Vancouver Lake Crew team also won the junior mixed novice eight race. Team members were coxswain Katie Hickey, Nicholas John, Nick Bjergo, Pearce Fowler, Jacob Skimas, Gillian Selix, Brynn Landwehr, Natalie Huck and Lindsey Szueber.
In the men’s masters double scull race, Rick Gales and Robert Farentinos took first place for VLC, and Steve Winnett and Greg Borchers placed fifth.
Adult races used a 5,000-meter course. Youth races were 3,000 meters long.
Other boats that represented VLC included Nancy Chandlee and Michelle Mand who placed second in the women’s masters double scull race.
In the junior girls quad race, VLC’s Alexis Winnett, Ellie Varbourg, Bonnie Davidson and Gabriel MacClure. In the junior boys double scull, Tuck Wilcox and Michael Hewitt finished third.
A women’s masters quad team of Ellen Torres, Suzanne Borchers, Kathy Gillespie and Jonelle Bataglia placed fourth.
Two Vancouver Lake Crew junior varsity also placed. The junior boys JV eight (coxswain Daniel Alder, Tuck Wilcox, Michael Hewitt, Zach Greenen, Gabe Epstein, Andrew Nevitt, Nicholas John, Nick Bjergo and Phillip Renton) finished fourth. The junior boys JV four (coxswain Daniel Alder, Gabe Epstein, Deryk Ahner, Phillip Renton and Zach Greenen).
Vancouver Lake Crew coach Alan Stewart said three boats swamped in the rough water, but none from VLC.
