Try This: Family field trip fun for all

Clark County families can explore the natural world during the fall Family Field Trip Day at the Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center. The 100-acre natural area and working fish hatchery offers hands-on learning stations for kids, nature hikes and environment-inspired crafts.

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Where: Columbia Springs, 12208 S.E. Evergreen Highway, Vancouver.

Admission: $5 registration fee per child, free for adults accompanying children.

The field trip day is among many -options for getting out and about this weekend.

2. Zombies, witches and fun

Keep Halloween going a little longer with Run2Survive, as zombies set their sights on humans in an event that will benefit the Evergreen School District Foundation. Participants choose how they want to run, as a survivor avoiding an undead horde while completing the 2 1/2 -mile course, or a zombie intent on snatching lifeline flags from the survivors. There will also be a ghouls for school kids race, and costumes are encouraged. Continuing the festivities will be the Witches Brewfest, featuring drinks by local breweries, which is open to those 21 and older. Race day registration begins at 2 p.m., with the kids race kicking off at 3 p.m.; 5 p.m. for the main race and the brewfest runs from 4 to 9 p.m.

3. Harmonica performance

Harmonica virtuoso Joe Powers will be part of a rather unusual symphony concert as he showcases his flare for the tango with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The Portland musician has performed in a variety of music styles on his harmonica, from hip-hop to jazz, but he specializes in playing tango music. He has won prizes for his harmonica work at world competitions.

When: 3 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Skyview Concert Hall, 1300 N.W. 139th St., Vancouver.

Admission: $35 to $50, $30 for seniors, $10 for students.

4. A little dinner with your theater

Serendipity Players presents two one-act comedies set in a dinner theater format at El Presidente Restaurant. “Check Please” is a modern farce about the challenges of dating and “Coffee With God” focuses on one man’s attempt at getting God to explain the nature of the world. Tickets include dinner and the show, for those 21 and older. Attendees must arrive 30 minutes before the show.

When: 7 tonight; 1 p.m. Sunday.

5. Sci-fi classic hits big screen

Gifted Andrew “Ender” Wiggins (Asa Butterfield) is sent to the orbiting Battle School, where brilliant children are trained under Col. Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) in preparation for the return of an alien invasion. Ender competes against his cadet peers in constantly harder war games to find the future candidate to lead the International Fleet. “Ender’s Game” is rated PG-13.
