Try This: Run, paddle, hike & march

During Family Field Trip Day at the Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center, families are encouraged to explore the 100-acre urban natural area while visiting hands-on learning stations and creating nature crafts. Visitors can hike the nature trails, observe birds and wildlife, and visit a working hatchery.

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Where: Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center, 12208 S.E. Evergreen Highway, Vancouver.

$5 per child, free for adults accompanying children.

The family hikes are one of many options for getting out and about this weekend.

2. Get set to run

The Run Like a Girl event benefits Second Step Housing, a local nonprofit that fights against homelessness. Open to men, women and children, it offers 10K and 5K events for walkers and runners, with prizes awarded to the top finishers and best costumes.

7:45 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. race start Sunday.

3. Fun in Hockinson

Hockinson Fun Days will celebrate “Hockinson through the ages,” from the community’s first school in 1870 through today. The annual pancake breakfast hosted by Fire District 3 will run from 7 a.m. to noon, with demonstrations of equipment and more. It will be followed by the Fun Days parade that starts at noon, featuring bands, floats, classic cars and more, traveling from Hockinson High School to Northeast 182nd Avenue and Northeast 164th Street. A marketplace bazaar and the Country Fair Carnival will be held in the middle school gym until 4 p.m. On Sunday, participants can take part in the 5K Fun Run and Walk and children’s mile.

4. Discover a water trail

The Big Paddle invites participants to join a flotilla of kayaks, canoes and paddleboards in an event that celebrates National Trails Day by exploring the waterways of the Lake River. The flotilla will begin from the Mill Street boat ramp. The trek follows a ceremony, and travels past cultural, environmental and historic sites along the route.

5. Magicians pull off heists

A team of the world’s greatest illusionists called “The Four Horsemen” steal from corrupt businesses during their daring performance heists, only to shower the money on the public, as they try to stay one step ahead of the FBI. “Now You See Me” is rated PG-13.
