Camas girl wins Eoff Award

Sophia Hansen will earn a full scholarship for next year

Sophia Hansen of Camas is this year’s winner of the Eoff Award from the Portland Youth Philharmonic.

Hansen is a Skyridge Middle School sixth-grader and viola player with the organization.

The James Eoff award grants a full scholarship for the next year, to the musician who demonstrates superior excellence, commitment and improvement.

In addition to performing with Portland Youth Philharmonic, she also plays her viola for the children at the Washington State School for the Blind together with some other classical musician friends.

For three years, Hansen has also played with an open viola case at the Camas Farmer s Market and raised money for the Humane Society.

Currently, she is studying with viola virtuoso Joel Kennedy of Kennedy Violins in Vancouver.

She maintains a 4.0 GPA and her school activities include Advanced Placement classes, track, horseback riding, and Spanish and voice lessons. Hansen’s long-term goals are to play with a professional orchestra and be a lawyer.
