Nicole Goecke, Prairie girls track and field

Nicole Goecke of Prairie girls track and field was voted The Columbian’s high school athlete of the week for the week of May 13-18 in a vote by fans on Facebook.

Goecke collected 38 percent of the 319 votes cast to beat out Union soccer player Mitch Wheelon, who had 25 percent.

Goecke won the 1,600-meter run in the 3A bi-district meet on Friday, then made the best of an interesting situation to win the 800 on Saturday. She was disqualified from the 800, but was reinstated after an official re-evaluated the initial ruling. Goecke did not let it distract her. She won the final easily.

The other nominees were Skyview softball player Michelle Brincefield, Skyview baseball player Ian Hamilton and Camas tennis players Esther Kwon and Jen Lewis.

Nominees are posted on The Columbian’s prep sports blog at www.360preps.com by Monday. Voting starts Monday and continues through 8 p.m. Thursday at www.facebook.com/360preps.
