The U.S. Forest Service and the Mount St. Helens Institute on Monday unveiled a new website connecting users to a deep collection of information featuring interactive and multimedia elements about Mount St. Helens. The launch comes just before the 33rd anniversary of the volcano’s May 18, 1980, eruption.
The website includes information about the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center, formerly known as the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center. The facility had been closed due to budget cuts before reopening with a new purpose last year.
The site offers a detailed history of the mountain, and the evolution of the surrounding landscape before and since the 1980 eruption. It also lists events and updates across the entire Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, which is managed by the forest service.
Both the Coldwater facility and Johnston Ridge Observatory, the main visitor center near the mountain, are along state Highway 504 east of Castle Rock. The entire highway opened for the season on Saturday.
