Local law enforcement agencies invite the public to attend the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, in the courtyard of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street, to recognize fallen officers. Last year, 120 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty around the nation.
The ceremony includes the posting of colors, a 21-gun salute, a performance from a Portland Police Highland Guard bagpiper and an address from Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Tony Golik. The ceremony should end around noon.
On average, a law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the U.S. every 57 hours, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The organization estimates 160 officers are killed each year. Most commonly, officers are shot.
