Three gymnasts from Clark County were among the hundreds from around the country who participated in the 2013 USA Gymnastics Men’s Junior Olympics National Championships, which concluded on Sunday in Portland.
Max DeFrees of Vancouver placed 23rd among 70 16-year-olds in all-around scoring. Andre Hufnagel of Battle Ground earned a sixth-place medal on the pommel horse for the second year in a row. And Trace Jacquot placed 39th all-around in the competition for 15-year-olds.
Hufnagel, who trains at Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, competed only on the pommel horse at the nationals. His combined score from preliminary and finals routines of 26.65 earned him a medal.
DeFrees, a junior at Seton Catholic High School, made the finals in all six events and competed in sessions on Thursday and on Saturday at the Oregon Convention Center. This was the third time DeFrees has participated in the national meet. He trains at Black Hills Gymnastics in Lacey.
DeFrees’ two-day total score was 150.25. His top scores were a 14.000 on the uneven bars and a 13.25 on the rings, both during Thursday’s preliminary round.
Jacquot, who trains at Vancouver Elite Gymnastics Academy in Camas, had a total score of 98.0. He made finals on floor exercise and the high bar. His top score during the meet was a 13.55 in the floor exercise preliminaries.Nick McAfee of VEGA also qualified for the meet, but was injured and did not participate.
Local middle schoolers race, place in Eugene
Six middle school runners from Clark County represented the Evergreen Storm Track Club in special 1-mile races on Friday as part of the Oregon Twilight meet at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Skyridge Middle School seventh-grader Emily Wilson led a 4-5-6 finish for Storm runners in the girls race that featured 46 entries. Wilson, who led much of the race, finished with a personal best time of 5 minutes, 28.26 seconds.
Right behind Wilson were Cascade Middle School eighth-grader Savanna Craig (5:29.66) and Skyridge eighth-grader Marley Lefore (5:29.90). Meghan Finley, a Shahala Middle School eighth grader was 12th (5:38.95) and Serena Smith, a Shahala Middle School sixth-grader finished 24th (5:53.12).In the boys mile, Miguel DeLaMelena placed sixth with a time of 4:52.24. He is an eighth-grader at Frontier Middle School. Forty-five boys ran in the race.
Evergreen girls host lacrosse state playoff today
The Evergreen Lacrosse Club will make its second consecutive appearance in the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association state playoffs when the Black Cats host Stadium of Tacoma at 6 p.m. today at McKenzie Stadium.
Evergreen (8-3-1) will enter the championship chase on a six-game winning streak after closing out the regular season with a 14-7 victory over Graham-Kapowsin on April 30. Senior Emily McCoy tallied six goals, while Madeline McKinnon added a hat trick, and goalie Dawn Lumen had 11 saves.
Evergreen earned the second automatic berth from the Nisqually Conference, while Stadium (7-4-1) was the number two team in the Peninsula Conference. McKinnon (52 goals, three assists) and McCoy (40 goals, one assist) lead the Evergreen attack. Lumen has a 7.63 goals-against average and a has stopped 59.4 percent of the shots at goal, both among the top marks in the state.The winner of Tuesday’s contest will face either third-seeded Mercer Island or 14th-seeded Garfield in the quarterfinals. Lake Sammamish, who defeated ELC in last year’s tournament en route to the finals, is the top seed in this year’s event.
King’s Way boys lacrosse loses on road
King’s Way lacrosse lost its fourth consecutive match on Friday in the top classification of the Washington High School Boys Association, dropping an 8-5 contest at Tahoma of Covington.
Connor Dyehouse had three goals and Jack Beall and Clayton Frank each tallied one for the Knights. At 6-5, King’s Way remains in second place in the South Sound Division.
King’s Way plays games on Friday at Bellarmine Prep and on Saturday at Kamiak before wrapping up its regular season at home on May 18.
In Division 2 games, both Camas and Union posted wins at Selah over the weekend. Camas also lost at Richland. Union, which draws players from around the Evergreen Public Schools district, finished second in its division and Camas placed third. Each first-year team is 5-6 overall.
Camas’ Bradley Stanchfield had three goals, three assists and fielded nine ground balls on Saturday in the 8-3 win at Selah. Bryce Tabbut had three goals and eight ground ball in Friday’s 13-5 Camas loss at Richland.For Union, Ben Morasch scored four goals and Jack Lamey claimed 10 ground balls in the 7-3 Friday win at Selah.
Event supports cystic fibrosis research
A walk to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver. Registration opens at 9 a.m.
The annual Great Strides event is held to raise money and awareness to help search for a CF cure. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States.
