Weather Eye: Spring weather perfect for Easter egg hunts, setting record high

Happy Easter, everyone! And with a sunny prelude on Saturday, how can today be any better? Another day filled with sunshine and warm temperatures bumping 70 degrees. It was 70 degrees or more nearly everywhere Saturday from the ocean beaches to central and eastern Oregon and Washington.

We are off to such a great start to spring — last year, we didn’t reach the 70s until the third week in April. And it wasn’t until June in 2011. We will have a few more days of dry weather until later in the week we return to — well, do I dare say “normal” spring weather, as in clouds and showers? Next weekend most likely won’t be like this one, so soak it up while you can.

At 4 p.m., I had 77 degrees on my Salmon Creek deck and Vancouver was 75 degrees, the first 70 degree reading since Oct. 22. Portland Airport set a record high Saturday at 4 p.m. with 75 degrees. The old record, 74 degrees, was set in 1942. Vancouver’s record was 81 degrees set in 1923.

I imagine just about everyone ventured outside Saturday. I heard lawn mowers going and saw cars being washed.

The garden centers were busy as a bee selling plants and flowers. Just a reminder: I noticed many people walking out of one garden center with delicate plants such as zinnias and geraniums. The average last frost isn’t until later in April for greater Vancouver and into mid-May for the urban areas. So if you got a jump start, be prepared to cover those plants.

If I see any freezes headed our way, I will let you know.
