Construction will begin next month on Woodland’s new police station, a nearly $2.5 million project meant to alleviate the department’s growing pains.
When the city’s current 1,000-square-foot police station was built in 1971, there were only three full-time staffers — now there are 12.
Woodland Mayor Grover Laseke said the larger space at 300 E. Scott Ave. will let police stretch out, relieving the increasing burden of operating in such cramped quarters. The department’s detective currently works in an old broom closet.
In November 2011, Woodland voters approved a 0.1 percentage point sales tax increase to build the station, which will pay off the project’s cost over 25 years.
After an 11 a.m. ground-breaking ceremony April 13, construction on the modular building is expected to wrap up in August.
