Construction starts Monday on Grant, Sixth and Seventh streets and the Sixth/Seventh streets connector in downtown Vancouver west of Esther Short Park.
It’s part of the roadway phase of the Waterfront Access Project, slated to run through the end of 2013.
All temporary road closures and detours will be posted with advance notice, according to a notice from the City of Vancouver. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should watch for detour signs and flaggers.
People can still access area businesses, including The Columbian, and events at Esther Short Park will continue as usual.
This phase of the project includes:
• Extending Esther and Grant streets south under the BNSF Railway berm to the waterfront.
• Connecting Eighth Street to Jefferson Street.
• Closing the railroad crossings at Eighth and Jefferson to improve safety and reduce train noise.
• Extending Sixth and Seventh streets to the industrial area to the west.
• Installing traffic signals at Grant and Eighth streets and the extended Sixth Street.
• Resurfacing the streets and sidewalks.
• Pavement overlay and the installation of an ADA accessible ramp.
There will also be fiber-optic work and a pavement overlay on Harney Street from Eighth to just north of 12th Street.
The closure of Jefferson Street between Eighth and Evergreen is currently anticipated for this fall. Grant is closed and expected to open later in the fall.
Arnold Way, between Columbia and Esther streets behind city hall, will be closed as needed.
The roadways are slated to be finished by the end the year.
