McCartney is one of the handful of individual at-large qualifiers selected to compete in Corvallis, one in each of the four events and five all-around competitors.
The top two teams from the each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA championships. The top two all-arounders and any event champion, outside of those teams, also move on to the NCAA championships, to be held April 19-21 in Los Angeles at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.
McCartney placed ninth in the all-around at the Western Athletic Conference Championships held Saturday at Southern Utah University in Cedar City.
She tied for seventh in vault, tied for eighth in floor exercise, tied for 12th in balance beam and was 35th in parallel bars.
Pacific’s Malychewski Scholar All-American
Pacific University junior wrestler Caleb Malychewski was named an NCAA Division III Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
The Camas High School graduate put together the best season for a Pacific wrestler in the last seven years, finishing with a 30-10 record and a No. 9 ranking in the 184-pound weight class in the NWCA Division III individual rankings.
After losing his first match of the season, Malychewski went on to win his next 14 matches and 20 of 22.
He placed second at 184 at the NCAA West Regional. He dropped both of his matches at the national championships, falling 1-0 to Roland Dunlap of Wisconsin-Whitewater and 5-2 to Mitchell Hagen of St. John’s (Minnesota).
The Boxers were also one of 25 honorees recognized as Division III All-Academic Teams.
Pacific earned selection for a 3.29 cumulative grade-point average, which was figured based on the GPAs of the team’s top 10 wrestlers.
The awards were announced as part of the NCAA Division III Championships, March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
For recognition as individual NWCA Scholar All-Americans, a wrestler must have placed in the top six at his regional meet and attained a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better. Also eligible are those with had a winning percentage of over 67 percent who did not place in the top six at the regional meet.
Watson gives Cavs timely hitting as DH
Concordia University senior designated hitter C.J. Watson shares the baseball team lead with 14 runs batted in this season.
Many of the Evergreen High School graduate’s hits have come in a timely fashion for the Cavaliers (15-15, 7-5 NAIA West), according to the school.
Watson leads the team with a .400 batting average with runners on base, hitting safely 18 of the 45 times he’s been in that situation.
He leads the team with a .469 batting average (15 for 32) with runners in scoring position, and he advances baserunners 56.6 percent of the time he has the opportunity.
Vancouver products are also making their mark on the pitching staff:
• Concordia senior Alex Bos (Prairie High School) leads all of NAIA with 54.0 innings pitched. He is tied for second in the NAIA West Grouping with three runners picked off, third in batting average against (.199) and tied for third with 33 strikeouts.
• CU junior Christian Bannister (Columbia River High School) leads the grouping with 12 games finished and is third in appearances and games in relief, both 13. Bannister also ranks 41st in NAIA with three saves.
• CU junior Jon Yearout (Columbia River) is fifth with 31 strikeouts and tied for fifth with seven starts.
Adamko throws P.R. at Trojan Invitational
Washington State sophomore Anna Adamko set a personal record in the javelin at the Trojan Invitational track and field meet Saturday at the University of Southern California.
The Columbia River High School graduate was the runner-up in the event with a throw of 161 feet, 5 inches, the sixth-best throw in WSU history.
Dixson wins shot, discus at L&C meet
Concordia University senior Gabi Dixson won the shot put and discus at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open on Saturday in Portland.
Dixson, from Battle Ground, also placed second in the hammer throw.
Her mark of 156 feet, 6 inches in discus was a season best. She also threw 47-03/4 in shot put and 171-11 in hammer.
The Cavaliers won the team title and were named Cascade Collegiate Conference Team of the Week.
Arn helps George Fox reach new heights
Woodland High School graduate Charity Arn is ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in the heptathlon and 10th in the 100-meter hurdles, helping George Fox University to reach No. 5 in the first NCAA-III rankings of the season. That marks the highest ranking in the program’s history.
A sophomore in eligibility, Arn has season bests of 4,477 points in the heptathlon and 15.34 seconds in the 100 hurdles. Both performances were during the Pacific Multi-Events on March 14-15.
Speyer helps Linfield top D-III rankings
Linfield College is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III baseball by both d3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Union High School graduate Garett Speyer, a Linfield junior, has a 0.93 ERA in 9.2 innings over six appearances.
