Ben Morasch scored the go-ahead goal with just over three minutes left in regulation on Wednesday to lift Union to a 7-6 boys lacrosse win over Camas in the first meeting between the new teams.
An estimated 500 spectators attended the game at Doc Harris Stadium, according to a report by the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association. This is the first season that Camas and Union have fielded their own lacrosse teams, and both are playing in the second division of the statewide organization.
With the score knotted at 6-6 and Union holding a man advantage, Morasch, a freshman at neighboring Mountain View High School, made a left-side drive from behind the goal and fired home the go-ahead score.
Sophomore Chandler Lindhorst led Union with three goals and three ground balls while sophomore goaltender Payton Summers made 17 saves. Union midfielder Jack Lamey had three ground balls and six takeaways.
For Camas, sophomore midfielder Badley Stanchfield scored two goals and Bryce Tabbut won five of 11 faceoffs.
• Gunnar Drell’s goal in the fourth quarter was the only tally for Union (2-2) in a 14-1 loss to Richland on Friday at Luke Jensen Sports Park in Vancouver.
• Austin Garwood scored the lone goal for Camas (1-2) on Saturday in a 9-1 loss to visiting Richland.
King’s Way lacrosse stays unbeaten
Clayton Frank scored with 20 seconds remaining in overtime to lift King’s Way Christian to a 14-13 boys high school lacrosse win over Eastside Catholic on Friday before about 400 fans at King’s Way Christian School. King’s Way mounted a seven-goal run to erase a 13-6 Eastside Catholic lead early in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Frank’s goal came on a man-up situation after Eastside Catholic’s Jeff Foreman was whistled for a slash with 24 seconds to go.
Four seconds later, Frank took a pass from the Knights’ Jack Beall and delivered a 12-yard shot that ricocheted off the left pipe and into the net.
Frank, a senior at Columbia River, finished the game with five goals, two assists and 13 ground balls. Conner Dyehouse, Brian Prigmore and Jack Beall had three apiece for King’s Way. Conrad Littlefield finished with 13 saves.
At 3-0, the Knights sit atop the South Sound Division of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division I. King’s Way hosts Bothell-Inglemoor (0-3-0) at 7 p.m. this Friday at King’s Way Christian School.
Evergreen lacrosse girls net season’s first win
The Evergreen Lacrosse Club posted its first win of the high school girls lacrosse season on Saturday, beating Bellevue 16-8 at McKenzie Stadium.
The Black Cats were led by senior attacker Emily McCoy, who tallied six goals in the victory. All-conference midfielder Madeline McKinnon added four goals, while senior goalie Dawn Lumen registered 13 saves to post her first win.
McCoy’s move into attack last week sparked the Evergreen offense, as she and McKinnon each scored five goals last Wednesday at Bellarmine Prep, a game that ended in a 15-15 tie. However, ELC squandered a late three-goal lead, and wound up in a 15-15 tie in Tacoma.
Evergreen opens Nisqually Conference play in the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association with a 6 p.m. Wednesday match at Spanaway Lake. A 10-day break follows that game before returning to action on April 9 at Gig Harbor.
Local swimmer wins at age-group meet
Anna Panebianco of the Columbia River Swim Team won the girls 100-yard backstroke for ages 15-18 at the Northwest Section Age Group Championships, which took place Friday through Sunday at the Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Her winning time was 59.16 seconds.
Panebianco also finished third in the 200 backstroke (2:09.17).
John Utas picked up second-place finishes in the boys ages 15-18 50 freestyle (22.53) and 100 free (49.11).
The Columbia River Swim Team’s Andrew Chang made the awards podium for 13-year-old boys in four individual events. He placed fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:05.82), and seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:06.65), the 100 butterfly (57.11) and the 200 freestyle (1:53.21).
Also for CRST, Livi Cox was eighth in the 14-year-old girls 100 back (1:00.37).
In the 200-yard medley relay for girls ages 15-18, the CRST took second place. Panebianco, Lauren Woods, Alice Chang and Corrine Bintz finished with a time of 1:53.74. The same four girls placed sixth in the 400 medley relay (4:11.25).
Area high school rugby teams post wins
The Prairie Wolf Pack high school rugby team defeat Canby 29-10 on Saturday at Laurin Middle School.
Manny Belazquez scored a try on a 20-yard run in the second half for Prairie. Colton Prestwich, Tyler Didericksen and Cody Flores also scored for the Wolf Pack.
Coach John Fletcher said that new players Tyler Grant and Mitch Bessett both played well that Jake Lucia played a strong game at the lock position.
Next for Prairie is an 11 a.m. game on April 6 against Battle Ground.
Battle Ground 38, Newberg 10 — Trevor Ingram had three tries on Saturday as Battle Ground Bulls scored a 38-10 win over visiting Newberg at Laurin Middle School.
John Cormican, Jake Sachen and Daniel Monen also scored for the Bulls. Quinten Martinez kicked four conversions. Ingram and Cormican shared man of the match honors, according to Bulls coach Daniel Simental.
Clark County 48, Polk County 21 — The Clark County Warriors beat Polk County, Ore., on Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the high school season.
Drew Clarkson scored a pair of tries and earned man of the match honors for the Warriors. Jessie Saulo also scored two tries. Others scoring for the Warriors were Brock Busch, Brendon Curle, Darrin Curle, Michael DiGenova, Jessie Kiesser, and Jason Vailea.
The Clark County team, which was a Camas squad last season, is idle until April 6, when it visits Linn-Benton at Albany, Ore. The next home game is at 10 a.m. on April 13th at Liberty Middle School in Camas against The Vandals of Portland.
